LEWISTON, Idaho – Faulkner (Ala.) starting pitcher Johnny Shuttlesworth took home All-Tournament Team and World Series Most Valuable Player honors after helping the Eagles capture the program’s first-ever national baseball championship at the 2013 Avista-NAIA Baseball World Series at Harris Field on Thursday night.
Shuttlesworth, a senior right handed pitcher from Tuscaloosa, Ala., earned victories in two of Faulkner’s five games, including the win in the title game against Lewis-Clark State (Idaho). He finished the championship with a 2.51 earned run average over the course of 14.1 innings.
National champion Faulkner and runner-up Lewis-Clark State (Idaho) dominated the All-Tournament team with 11 of the possible 16 members. The All-Tournament awards were selected by the World Series Games Committee, NAIA officials and the media covering the event. Lewis-Clark State led all teams with six players selected to the squad.
Josh Silver, a junior shortstop for Lee (Tenn.), was named the Gold Glove winner. Silver tallied seven putouts and 13 assists, while committing only one error in 21 chances. In addition to his defense, Silver hit .375 (6-for-16) at the World Series with one home run and five RBI. His seven runs scored were second only to teammate Brady Renner’s 10.
Antonio Kendrick of Faulkner (Ala.) took home the Charles Berry Hustle Award. The senior outfielder from Forrest Park, Ga., was 2-for-2 in stolen bases to go along with.368 (7-for-19) batting average and five runs scored. He also recorded 10 putouts and two assists from his centerfield position.
In addition to Shuttlesworth, Faulkner’s All-Tournament Team representatives were first baseman Cayleb Coker, outfielder David Bishop, designated hitter Michael Cruz and pitcher Julian Esquibel.
For Lewis-Clark State, third baseman Brady Steiger, shortstop Bobby Joe Tannehill, catcher Kyle Blackwell, outfielders Kyle Knigge and Jake Shirley, and pitcher Anthony Armanino made the squad.2013 Avista-NAIA Baseball World Series All-Tournament Team
