SHAWNEE, Okla. -- Third-ranked Oklahoma Baptist picked up an important win with a 66-57 victory in Shawnee Thursday over No. 6 Rogers State in Sooner Athletic Conference men's basketball.

The victory gives OBU a two-game lead in the conference standings and the head-to-head tiebreaker over the Hillcats, who fell into a tie for second with Southern Nazarene. It was the second NAIA Top 10 win for the Bison in the series.

"We played defense well enough to win," said Bison Coach Doug Tolin. "I'm proud of how hard we played."

The Bison never trailed and held the NAIA's No. 10 scoring offense 27 points below its season average to overcome a 40-percent shooting night from the field.

"We fell off shooting but focused on defense," said Bison point guard Jacobi Isham. "Everyone plays their role and works hard when they get on the floor."

OBU got the night off to a good start by scoring 15 of the game's first 17 points as DeAngelo McIntosh and Emmanuel Wilson got five points apiece. That staked the Bison to a 15-2 lead seven minutes into the game.

Rogers State got as close as six points, but the Bison used an 18-8 run to build to a 37-21 lead and took a 37-25 advantage to the intermission. Derick Echols had seven points and McIntosh five in that run.

The Hillcats got as close as seven points in the second half, but OBU answered the bell and carried off the win.

McIntosh had 23 points and pulled in a career-best 15 rebounds for his second consecutive double-double.

Echols and Heath McKay had 10 apiece.

Justynn Hammond paced Rogers State (16-4, 9-4) with 20 points.

Now 18-2 on the season and 11-2 in the SAC, the Bison play at red-hot John Brown Saturday at 5 p.m. JBU is on a three-game win streak with all three wins coming on the road to pull into fourth in the league.

"We'll be ready to go Saturday," said Tolin. "The fun of the conference is that you have to play good every game."
