KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Adella King of Indiana Tech has been named the NAIA National Women’s Indoor Track Athlete of the Week and Emily Smith of Aquinas (Mich.) has been tabbed as the NAIA National Women’s Indoor Field Athlete of the Week, the national office announced on Wednesday. King and Smith were selected based on their performances from Jan. 23 – 29. This week’s announcement marks the first time this season the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference has been represented in the weekly award.
King, a junior from Detriot, Mich., ended the week with two individual titles and two school records, while also bettering her already NAIA automatic qualifying times in all three events she participated in at the Spire Midwest Open on Jan. 28. Her time of 24.25 in the 200-meter dash topped a field of 89 runners, including individuals from NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II and Canadian Universities, and set a new school record. She claimed her second school record and first-place finish in the 400-meter dash with a time of 56.24. King rounded out her performance at the event with a second-place finish in the 60-meter dash after clocking in at 7.52 seconds.
Smith, a junior from Port Huron, Mich., broke personal records and reached NAIA automatic qualifying status in the women’s weight throw and shot put at the Calvin College Invitational on Jan. 27. Her mark of 52-2 ¾ in the weight throw and 42-5 ¼ in the shot put propelled her to individual championships in both events. With the national event qualification, Smith ranks second all-time at Aquinas in automatic qualifications in the weight throw and third all time in the shot put.
