Southern Oregon Rolls To First Round Victory

POINT LOOKOUT, Mo. (Box Score)- Southern Oregon punched its ticket into the second round with a convincing 83-66 win over #14 Madonna (Mich.) in the first round of the 22nd annual NAIA Division II Men's Basketball National Championship. The 2013 event is being held at the Keeter Gymnasium on the campus of College of the Ozarks (Mo.).

Southern Oregon was led by sophomore forward Eric Thompson who scored tournament-best 30 points, going 5-for-6 from beyond the arc. Kyle Tedder also drained five three-pointers en route to a 20-point effort while David Sturner added 10 points and six rebounds.

Tied at 11, Southern Oregon opened up a 25-14 lead behind its three-point shooting, draining three during a three minute stretch in the first half. The Raiders led 51-38 at the break and shot 50% (7/14) from beyond the arc in the first half.

Southern Oregon put the game out of reach with an 8-2 run early in the second half to extend its lead to over 20. They limited Madonna to just 39% shooting in the final 20 minutes.

The Raiders shot 46% for the game and made 11 three-pointers, shooting 46% from beyond the arc.

Madonna shot 47% for the game and was led in scoring by Bobby Naubert and Travis Schuba with 17 points each. Making its first ever tournament appearance, the Crusaders end the season with a 25-9 record.

Southern Oregon advances to the second round for just the second time in its program history and first since 2005. They will play either #3 Northwood (Fla.) or College of the Ozarks (Mo.) on Friday 7:30 p.m. The 32-team, single elimination tournament concludes Tuesday, March 12, with the championship game to tip-off at 8 pm.
