KANSAS CITY, Mo. – For the fourth time this season and first time since March 5, Embry-Riddle (Fla.) has claimed the No. 1 ranking in the 2013 NAIA Men’s Tennis Coaches’ Top 25 poll, the national office announced Tuesday. The Eagles received 5-of-13 first-place votes for 334 points to secure the top ranking.
Embry-Riddle edged out Auburn Montgomery (Ala.) by one point for the top spot. On April 6, Embry-Riddle was victorious over The Sun Conference opponent Warner (Fla.), 8-1. The next day, the Eagles defeated NCAA Division II Lynn (Fla.), 5-1. The winning ways continued for Embry-Riddle as they defeated NCAA Division II Rollins (Fla.), 6-3, on April 11. The Eagles have won 12-straight matches, dating back to its first win on March 5.
Auburn Montgomery claimed the No. 2 ranking and collected four first-place votes with 333 points. The Warhawks have won seven in-a-row. Holding steady at No. 3 is Vanguard (Calif.) as they received the last four first-place votes and notched 329 points. Vanguard is the only undefeated team in the Top 25, as it is 21-0 on the season. Moving up one position to No. 4 is Westmont (Calif.) with 303 points. Rounding out the top five is No. 5 Xavier with 295 points.
A trio of schools made the biggest jump this week as Xavier, No. 8 Bethel (Tenn.) and No. 19 Warner all improved three spots in the poll. On the opposite end of the spectrum, Campbellsville (Ky.) fell the farthest dropping six spots.
Joining the Top 25 this week is No. 20 Pikeville (Ky.) and No. 25 Indiana Wesleyan. Pikeville rejoins the poll after missing one week. In its last matches on April 6 – 7, Pikeville was victorious over St. Catherine (Ky.), 9-0, and Campbellsville, 6-3.
Indiana Wesleyan joins the poll for the first time this season and makes its first appearance since Feb. 23, 2010. The Wildcats are 15-5 on the season.
Falling out of the Top 25 is Olivet Nazarene (Ill.) (No. 21) and Spring Arbor (Mich.) (No. 25).
Ten of the 13 conferences/independents/unaffiliated groupings are represented throughout the Top 25, led by The Sun Conference and Mid-South Conference with four teams apiece. A trio of conferences follow with three teams each.
The poll was voted upon by a panel of head coaches representing each of the conferences/independents/unaffiliated groupings. The sixth regular-season poll will be announced on April 30.
