KANSAS CITY, Mo. – National champion Auburn Montgomery tops the 2013 NAIA Women’s Tennis Coaches’ Postseason Top 25 Poll, the national office announced Wednesday. The Warhawks received 12-of-12 first-place votes for 312 points to earn the top spot in the ranking.
Auburn Montgomery claimed its ninth national title in 10 years after defeating William Carey (Miss.), 5-1, on May 18. This is the first No. 1 ranking since Feb. 19 and is their third top ranking of the season.
National runner-up William Carey comes in No. 2 with 302 points. Claiming the No. 3 ranking is Xavier (La.) with 289 points. Joining the top five is No. 4 Lindsey Wilson (Ky.), who jumped up two spots, with 285 points. Rounding out the top five is SCAD Savannah (Ga.) and Brenau (Ga.), who are tied at five, with 268 points.
Making the biggest jump this week is Northwood (Fla.). The Seahawks went 2-1 in the national championship with wins coming over Indiana Southeast, 9-0, and over seventh-seed Lewis-Clark State (Idaho) in a 5-3 upset. Northwood was knocked out in the quarterfinals by national champion Auburn Montgomery.
Joining the Top 25 this week is No. 25 Bethel (Kan.). The Threshers were defeated in the first round of the national championship by Oklahoma Baptist, 7-2, on May 14.
Falling from the Top 25 is Lee (Tenn.) (No. 24).
Eleven of the 13 conferences/independents/unaffiliated groupings are represented in the poll, led by the Southern States Athletic Conference and The Sun Conference with four teams. A trio of conferences follow with three teams apiece.
The poll was voted upon by a panel of head coaches representing each of the conferences/independents/unaffiliated groupings.
Notes: (All information as of the 2000 season) Auburn Montgomery (Ala.) has been ranked No. 1 a total of 70 times, the most all-time… Brenau (Ga.) is next closest with 11 No. 1 rankings, followed by former-NAIA member Fresno Pacific (Calif.) with eight, former-NAIA member Shorter (Ga.) and Xavier (La.) with three and Northwood (Fla.) with two … Auburn Montgomery topped each poll from Feb. 11, 2004, to May 1, 2010, a span of 47-straight No. 1 rankings, which is an NAIA record … The next closest streak is just eight by Fresno Pacific, which garnered the top selection in all eight polls in 2011 … Northwood gained its only two No. 1 rankings in school history in 2003 when it went on to win the national championship … Auburn Montgomery has been ranked in the top five since, Feb. 11, 2004… The last time a non-Southern States Athletic Conference School was No. 1, was when former-NAIA member Fresno Pacific (Calif.) claimed the No. 1 ranking during the entire 2011 season.
