2015 NAIA Women?s Soccer National Championship Semifinal No. 1 Recap

ORANGE BEACH, Ala. – (Bracket | Box Score) Defending national champion No. 1 Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) advances to its second-straight NAIA Women’s Soccer National Championship final match and its sixth overall with a 3-1 victory over No. 4 Benedictine (Kan.). The Blue Raiders will play tomorrow at 3 p.m. CST and will take on the winner between Spring Arbor (Mich.)/Northwestern Ohio game.

The first half featured a defensive game as neither team had much of a scoring opportunity. There were a total of seven shots, four by Benedictine and three by Lindsey Wilson.

The Blue Raiders, looking for their third championship finals appearance in four years, got on the board in the 37th minute as Shelby Austin scored an unassisted goal for the 1-0 lead.

In the second half, the offensive game started opening up for both teams. The Blue Raiders took advantage of a free kick in the 49th minute as Lyana Perez volleyed the cross from Fabienne Rochaix, into the back of the net for a two goal advantage.

In the 63rd minute, Benedictine’s Anna Romano dribbled her way through the Blue Raiders defense and hit a shot to the far post, but a great one-handed diving save by Johanna Henriksson, kept the Ravens off the board.

In the 80th minute, Mikaela Brewitz scored the third goal of the afternoon for the Blue Raiders as she found the back of the net off a through ball from Yvonne Ploeg.

Benedictine spoiled Henriksson’s clean sheet in the 86th minute when Rosie McShane scored over Henriksson’s head.

Lindsey Wilson improves to 20-1-2 while, Benedictine finishes the season with a 22-2-1 record.

“They [Benedictine] are a great program, we fully anticipated a 90 minute battle plus, but credit to our girls we played well today, we stretched them out and took advantage of some of the opportunities that they gave us and that’s the name of the game,” said Lindsey Wilson Head Coach Drew Burwash, “Goals are so valuable and so hard to come by when you play quality teams like them. We were fortunate and did a good job finishing today with the chances that we had. I’m proud of our girls. We fought hard and when you play three games in five days at this level it’s definitely an endurance test and I’m extremely proud of them.”

With the three goals today, Lindsey Wilson has tied Westmont (Calif.) (2003) for the National Championship record for most goals in the tournament with 17.
