2016 Women?s National Championship First and Second Round Recap

MOBILE, Ala. – (Results | Bracket | Video Recap) After multiple rain delays and a suspension of play yesterday, the first and second round of the 2016 Women’s Tennis National Championship has ended in Mobile, Ala. Third-round play will commence tomorrow at 9 a.m. CDT.
No. 22 Mobile (Ala.) recorded the biggest upset in the first-round, sweeping No. 11 Arizona Christian, 6-0. While No. 14 Keiser (Fla.) and No. 19 LSU Alexandria (La.) went through a six hour battle ending in a Generals victory, 5-4.
Newcomers to the national championship, No. 10 William Woods (Mo.) and No. 9 Middle Georgia State advanced to second-round play. Middle Georgia State and William Woods both etched sweeps against their opponents. The Knights with a 5-0 victory over No. 24 Morningside (Iowa) and the Owls against No. 23 Asbury (Ky.), 5-0.
In today’s first-round, the higher seeds went 6-2. Mobile and LSU Alexandria were the only schools to pull upsets in morning play.
In the second longest match of the day, William Woods faced No. 7 Westmont (Calif.) in second-round action, ending in a 5-3 victory in the Owls favor. No. 4-6 singles for William Woods came in clutch, winning each of their singles matches to help their team advance to quarterfinal play for the first time in school history.
Five teams recorded sweeps against its opponent in second-round play, including No. 1 Georgia Gwinnett, who earned a first-round bye and advanced to quarterfinals for the third year in-a-row over No. 16 Olivet Nazarene (Ill.), 5-0. Auburn Montgomery (Ala.) also saw victory, bearing down on No. 15 Northwestern Ohio, 5-0.
No. 3 Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) ended the second-round in a 5-1 victory over a competitive LSU Alexandria team. The Blue Raiders will face off against No. 6 Cardinal Stritch tomorrow at 9 a.m. CDT.
All quarterfinal matches will start at 9 a.m. on Thursday morning, winners advancing to the semifinals.
