2016 NAIA Women?s Tennis National Championship Quarterfinals Recap

MOBILE, Ala. – (Bracket | Results | Video Recap) After an action packed filled day on Wednesday, play at the 2016 NAIA Women’s Tennis National Championship resumed as scheduled with teams hitting the courts at the Mobile Tennis Center for quarterfinals matches starting at 9 a.m. CDT.

No. 1 Georgia Gwinnett recorded the first win of the day, rolling past No. 8 Indiana Wesleyan, 5-0. No. 1 doubles Podda and Feller swept their game, 8-0 over Wilson and Solis to help solidify all three doubles matches on the day. The Grizzles are 9-1 in championship matches and advance to semifinal play for the third-straight year in-a-row.

In their 17th national championship appearance, the Warhawks of No. 2 Auburn Montgomery (Ala.) swept newcomers No. 10 William Woods (Mo.), 5-0. Auburn Montgomery made easy work of the Owls, winning all three doubles matches. Junior Anna Rudolfova sealed the deal with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Julia Mulder. With the win, the Warhawks continue towards their second national title and will meet No. 3 Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) in semifinal action tomorrow at 9 a.m. CDT.

The final two matches of the day saw the most action, with four well matched teams fighting for the final two spots in the national semifinals. No. 3 Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) competed in a competitive match against No. 6 Cardinal Stritch (Wis.) that ended in a Blue Raider victory, 5-1. Freshman Alex Shchipakina clinched the victory, going 6-2, 6-0 against opponent Louise Gruber. Lindsey Wilson is headed to its fifth-straight semifinals match and are 19-11 in championship play.

No. 4 SCAD Savannah (Ga.) and No. 5 Brenau (Ga.) were the last two teams to complete its match, with a victory favoring The Bees, 5-2. SCAD had to battle back after falling 1-2 in doubles, but found momentum in singles matches to continue to its first-ever semifinals appearance.

Semifinals play will commence tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. CDT.
