KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Three wins last week secured Shorter (Ga.)'s hold at No. 1 in the sixth regular-season edition of the 2011 - 12 NAIA Division I Men's Basketball Coaches' Top 25 Poll, the NAIA announced Monday. The Hawks captured 312 total points and all 12 first-place votes for the second-straight week. Since earning the No. 1 ranking three weeks ago, Shorter has won four games by an average of over 20 points. The Hawks latest victim was not a blowout as they handed then-No. 17 Lee (Tenn.) an 80-77 overtime loss at home.
For the third-consecutive poll, Robert Morris (Ill.) checks in at No. 2 with 302 total points. The Eagles own an eight-game winning streak after taking two Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference games over the weekend. No. 3 Southern Poly (Ga.) boasts its highest ranking of the year as it posted 287 points.
With a loss to unranked John Brown (Ark.) on Jan. 28, Oklahoma Baptist fell one spot to No. 4 with 182 points. Fifth-ranked Our Lady of the Lake (Texas) keeps moving up the poll. With 277 points and landing in their best position on the year, the Saints trail only Shorter's 21-game winning streak with 15-straight contests for the second-longest active mark.
Sprinting up nine spots, No. 7 Azusa Pacific (Calif.) is the biggest mover up the poll this week. The Cougars have won four in-a-row to break into a tie for the Golden State Athletic Conference lead at 7-3. The impressive statistic during their current streak is a 12.0 margin of victory.
No. 23 John Brown replaced Union (Tenn.) (No. 25) this week in the poll. The Eagles were last ranked on Dec. 20 with a 20th position. They improved to 17-5 on the year with a 78-71 upset of then-No. 3 Oklahoma Baptist on Jan. 28.
All 12 of the conferences and unaffiliated groups are represented this week, led by the four schools out of the Golden State Athletic Conference (GSAC). Azusa Pacific, No. 13 The Master's (Calif.), No. 16 Concordia (Calif.) and No. 22 Westmont (Calif.) all compete in the GSAC. The Mid-South Conference, Sooner Athletic Conference and Southern States Athletic Conference each landed a triplet of ranked teams.
The poll was voted upon by a panel of head coaches representing each of the conference and unaffiliated groups. The next Division I Men's Basketball Coaches' Top 25 Poll will be announced on Feb. 6.
