LA GRANDE, Ore. - The No. 21 Eastern Oregon University men's basketball team upset No. 5 Oregon Tech, 73-66.
The Mountaineers (9-4) (3-1) defeated OIT for the fifth straight time in La Grande behind 63 percent shooting from behind the perimeter. Josh Cottle, Jordan Gregg, and Jacques Wilson combined for 44 points to lead Eastern Oregon.
Cottle and Gregg each scored 15 points, and Wilson had 14. Cottle scored a season-high 15 points after shooting 5 for 10 from the field. Gregg was 6 of 9 from the field and has now scored double digits 31 times in his two seasons at EOU. Wilson made both of his three-point attempts and finished with his conference high in points so far this season.
Eastern Oregon is now 8-0 when they hold their opponent under 70 points.
EOU held Tech to a season-low 66 points. The Hustlin' Owls (11-3) (2-2) averaged 89 points per game entering the game. OIT has the nation's No.
4 offense in total points scored, 1,153. The Mountaineers' defense now ranks 13th in NAIA Div. 2 in points allowed per game, 64.5.
Tech was led by Joseph Foster's 19 points, and Justin Parnell's 17 points. OIT finished shooting 43 percent from the field and 32 percent from behind the arc. The Mountaineers were 62 percent from the perimeter. Each team took care of the ball extremely well, surrendering only seven turnovers each.
Eastern Oregon passed a huge hurdle sweeping the weekend, but now visit Concordia and No. 9 Warner Pacific on Dec. 30 and Dec. 31 in Portland.
The No. 21 Mountaineers will play four teams that combine for a 37-14 record before the next national poll is released on Jan. 11, 2010.
