KANSAS CITY, Mo. - (Scoreboard) (Updated Bracket) Five programs won their first-ever National Championship match as the 2012 NAIA Men's Soccer National Championship Opening Round is complete. Of that group, Jamestown (N.D.), a 1-0 road victor at Rocky Mountain (Mont.), is appearing in its inaugural event. All 16 Opening Round winners advance to play in the 54th annual National Championship final site presented by Carrabba's Italian Grill. That event will take place from Nov. 26 - Dec. 1 at the Emory Folmar Soccer Complex in Montgomery, Ala.
After the hosts went 9-4-3 today, the home teams have combined for a record of 48-20-8 since the Opening Round format began in 2008. Top-seed and defending national champion Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) won its fourth Opening Round home match in the last five years after a 7-2 defeat of Point Park (Pa.).
Three top-10 teams did not make it out of the Opening Round: No. 7 MidAmerica Nazarene (Kan.), No. 9 Oklahoma Wesleyan and No. 10 Kansas Wesleyan. After a 2-2 double overtime draw, the Pioneers had their playoff hopes halted as Oklahoma Baptist advanced in penalty kicks, 5-4. Oklahoma Wesleyan dropped its first match of 2012 after Hastings (Neb.) prevailed, 4-1. Olivet Nazarene (Ill.) notched the game-winner in the first overtime to steal a 3-2 road win at Kansas Wesleyan.
There were seven shutouts recorded today with the biggest margin of victory coming in the 7-0 Auburn Montgomery (Ala.) win against Florida Memorial. In addition, there were four overtime matches with three of those going into penalty kicks after two overtime periods could not decide the outcome.
