KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Indiana Wesleyan sits atop the 2012-13 NAIA Division II Women's Basketball Coaches' Top 25 Poll for the seventh-straight week, the national office announced on Tuesday. The Wildcats received nine-of-13 first-place votes and 340 points to earn the top ranking in the tenth-edition of the regular season poll.
On Feb. 27, the NAIA is providing a free live selection show with graphics to reveal the 32-team bracket for the 22nd Annual State Farm-NAIA Division II Women's Basketball National Championship. The women's bracket will be announced at 7 p.m. CST.
Indiana Wesleyan tied for the Crossroads League regular season title after going 2-0 last week. The Wildcats defeated Taylor (Ind.), 73-62, on Feb. 13 and three days later concluded the week with a victory over Goshen (Ind.) 79-54.
Moving up to No. 2 is Morningside (Iowa) with 325 points. The Mustangs won the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) and were victorious in its two games last week. Collecting the last four first-place votes and notching 321 points is No. 3 Eastern Oregon. The Mountaineers won the Cascade Collegiate Conference and have won 22-straight contests.
Co-Crossroads League regular season champion Saint Francis (Ind.) comes in at No. 4 with 311 points. The Cougars defeated Marian (Ind.), 78-57, on Feb. 13 and then defeated Mount Vernon Nazarene (Ohio), 66-58, three days later. Rounding out the top five is College of the Ozarks (Mo.) tallying 303 points. The Bobcats were victorious over Southwestern Christian (Okla.) on Feb. 15 in a 74-56 victory, but fell one day later to Oklahoma Wesleyan, 74-70.
Making the biggest leap in the poll this week is Purdue Calumet (Ind.), as they moved up four spots, from No. 23 to No. 19. The Peregrines went 1-1 last week with a victory over then-No. 16 Olivet Nazarene (Ill.), 121-113, on Feb. 13. Purdue Calumet's eight game-winning streak came to an end on Feb. 16 when they fell to Roosevelt (Ill.), 92-90, in overtime.
No teams joined or fell out of the Top 25 this week.
Eleven of the 13 Division II women's basketball conferences/independents are represented throughout the Top 25, led by the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference with five teams. The GPAC follows with four teams.
The poll was voted upon by a panel of head coaches representing each of the conferences and Independents. The final poll will be announced on Feb. 27.
Notes: (All information as of the 1999 - 2000 season) Indiana Wesleyan has appeared at the top of the poll on 32 occasions, the most of any program, followed by Morningside (Iowa) with 19... There have been 14 different teams to garner the No. 1 ranking all-time ... Three schools have spent an entire season at No. 1: Morningside in 2008-09, College of the Ozarks (Mo.) in 2007-08 and Saint Francis (Ind.) in 1999-2000... In the last 13 years, six teams that have been rated No. 1 in the preseason have gone on to win the national championship with the last being Northwestern (Iowa), who has accomplished the feat the last two years... Morningside (114), College of the Ozarks (107) and Saint Xavier (Ill.) (101) are the only teams who have been ranked in the Top 25 for over 100 consecutive weeks... Sixteen teams have been ranked in the Top 25 all season... Seven teams have punched their ticket to Sioux City for the national championship.
