Indiana Southeast Rallies Past Valley City State

POINT LOOKOUT, Mo. (Box Score) - Indiana Southeast scored the last four points of the game to take a 75-72 win over Valley City State (N. D.) in the first round of the 22nd annual NAIA Division II Men's Basketball National Championship. The 2013 event is being held at the Keeter Gymnasium on the campus of College of the Ozarks (Mo.).
The Grenadiers led by as many as eight early in the game but Valley City State had the lead trimmed 38-34 at halftime. The Vikings staged a late comeback and took a one point lead at 72-71 on a three-point shot by Sekani Milligen with under a minute remaining. Indiana Southeast answered with a two point basket by Kegan Clark for a 73-72 lead and after a missed Viking three-point attempt the Grenadiers made a pair of free throws for the final margin of victory.
Valley City State had a shot to tie the game that was short, advancing Indiana Southeast to the second round of the tournament for the second year in a row.
Indiana Southeast made 26-59 shots from the floor for 44 % from the floor and they were topped by Clark's 17 points. Kevin Mitchell added 14 points and six rebounds with six assists.
Valley City State was 25-60 from the field for 42 % and they were led by Milligen with 23 points while Dillan Ostrom scored 12 with eight rebounds.
Rebounding was even at 34-34 and there was a combined 17 turnovers between the two teams with Indiana Southeast giving it up eight times while forcing nine Grenadier turnovers.
Indiana Southeast will play on Friday against either St. Mary (Kan.) or St. Xavier (Ill.) at 4:00 p.m. The 32-team, single elimination tournament concludes Tuesday, March 12, with the championship game to tip-off at 8 pm.
