Saint Xavier Too Much For Spires

POINT LOOKOUT, Mo. (Box Score)- #6 Saint Xavier (Ill.) ran away with an 82-60 win over the University of Saint Mary (Kan.) in the first round of the 22nd annual NAIA Division II Men's Basketball National Championship. The 2013 event is being held at the Keeter Gymnasium on the campus of College of the Ozarks.

Playing in its first D-II Championship, Saint Xavier wasted little time as they jumped out to a 16-5 lead after a basket by Brad Karp. Facing a 26-15 deficit, Saint Mary charged back with an 8-0 run and trailed 31-28 with less than two minutes left in the first half. The Cougars, however, put in the final five points of the half to take a 36-28 advantage into the break.

Saint Xavier ran off four straight points and went by double digits to start the second half. The Spires kept it close and were down by just eight (47-39) after a three-pointer by Kevin Harvey. The Cougars answered with a decisive 11-2 spurt to put the game away, triggered by a three-point play by Tony Core.

Five Cougars players scored in double figures, led by Roosevelt Green with 18 points. Karp put in 15 and both Anthony Grant and Jack Krieger scored 12. Core netted 11 points coming off the bench. Saint Xavier shot 49% for the game, nearly 60% in the second half.

Saint Mary shot 31% for the game and was led by Matt Heydman with 18 points. Shiron Williams scored 10 and was the only other Spires' player in double figures. Saint Mary finishes the season with a 22-9 overall record.

Saint Xavier improves to 29-5 and will play #11 Indiana Southeast in the second round on Friday, March 8 at 4:00pm.
