KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Fla., will serve as the host for the 2013 National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics – Sports Information Directors Association (NAIA-SIDA) Convention, the NAIA announced Monday. The NAIA-SIDA Convention is scheduled to take place June 11 and 13.
NAIA Communications and Sports Information Directors from around the country will gather for professional development, national office information and organizational business during the event, which takes place at the iconic Daytona International Speedway.
“Embry-Riddle is incredibly excited to serve as the host of the 2013 version of NAIA-SIDA here in Daytona Beach,” said John Phillips, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University Associate Athletic Director. “We have partnered with our friends at Daytona International Speedway, to create a memorable event that we hope will be one of the greatest conventions in NAIA-SIDA history. Special thanks to Daytona International Speedway’s Director of Marketing Sean Belgrade for allowing us to host the meetings in the venue’s media center. We look forward to welcoming the group to Daytona Beach and the World’s Center of Racing!”
The 2013 schedule showcases some of the organization’s annual presentations by the national office, NAIA-SIDA president Jay Stancil and DakStats, while also having panels on statistics, video and staffing. All sessions will take place in the Dead Line Room at the Daytona Speedway. Attendees also have the opportunity to experience Hot Laps and a speedway tour.
A new addition to the schedule this year, the convention’s opening day closes with the Clarence “Ike” Pearson Awards Dinner where the 37th annual Clarence “Ike” Pearson Award winner will be recognized, along with the winners of the 2012 -13 NAIA-SIDA Publications Contests. The “Ike” Pearson award is named for the former statistical crew chief for the NAIA Men’s Basketball National Championship and is given annually to an outstanding NAIA Sports Information Directors as nominated by their peers.
“The annual NAIA-SIDA Convention is always a special time to reconnect with colleagues,” said Jay Stancil, NAIA-SIDA President and Union College (Ky.) Director of Sports Communications. “The NAIA-SIDA Board along with the staff at Embry-Riddle have worked hard to improve upon what was already a first-rate event. Being able to host the convention at the Daytona Speedway and to cap the day off with the Ike Pearson Awards Banquet will make this a truly memorable event.”
The convention, which is strongly focused on enhancing the evolving role of the Sports Information Director, wraps up as a part of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Convention at 7 a.m. on Thursday, June 13 inside the World Center Marriott Resort in Orlando, Fla. This secondary meeting features presentations from various CoSIDA officials, including a discussion on the CoSIDA-Capital One Academic All-America program.
