MARIETTA, Ga. – Former Southern Polytechnic State (Ga.) men’s soccer standout Mamadou “Futty” Danso was selected to the Major League Soccer Team of the Week this week. Danso earned the same recognition in May 2011.
Danso, who plays for the Portland Timbers of the MLS, earned the honor after playing all 90 minutes in his team’s 1-0 win over the San Jose Earthquakes on Sunday. A 6-foot-3, 185-pound defender from Serekunda, Gambia, Danso spearheaded the Timbers’ defense that allowed just six shots in posting a shutout. In his third year in the MLS with the Timbers, he was one of two Portland players chosen to the 11-member team.
At Southern Polytechnic, Danso competed for two seasons and received numerous honors while playing both as a defender and a forward. He scored 35 career goals with nine assists for 79 points.
In his final year of 2008, Danso became the Hornets’ first All-American in soccer, being named to the NAIA’s honorable mention list after being picked as the Southern States Athletic Conference Player of the Year and Offensive Player of the Year. In 2007, he was tabbed as the SSAC Newcomer of the Year. Danso was twice named as a First Team All-SSAC performer.
