DES MOINES, Iowa - The Grand View (Iowa) football team finally returned to Williams Stadium Saturday and gave the big home crowd plenty to cheer about. After three impressive road wins against NCAA Division I Drake, Siena Heights and 2012 NAIA National Champion Marian, No. 7 Grand View compiled 453 yards of total offense and kept second-ranked Saint Francis (Ind.) off the board until the final two minutes of the game in what ended in a 23-7 victory.
Grand View scored first with 5:09 remaining in the first quarter when Charles Badgett scampered in from three yards out and received a lead block from an unlikely source, star linebacker Dudley Bickham. The touchdown capped off a seven play, 37-yard drive.
In the second quarter, Grand View took a 10-0 lead off a 29-yard field goal by Ben Hurley. Hurley would give the Vikings two more field goals before the end of the game, one from 31 yards and another from 36.
Sophomore quarterback Derek Fulton had another great performance for GVU, completing 34-of-47 passes for 306 yards and rushing for 71 yards on 13 attempts. Brady Roland led the receiving core with 10 catches and 82 yards. Jackson Petz caught six for 52, Taylor Goebel caught five for 49 and Davion Hurst caught four for 44 yards.
The Grand View defense stole the show on Saturday holding the Cougars to 193 yards of offense. The first team Viking defense held St. Francis without a point and were led by a six tackle, two sack performance by Bickham. Grand View also got sacks from Cody Redmond and Cole Jackson.
Saint Francis tallied 651 yards of total offense, 33 first downs and 38 points last week against St. Ambrose (Iowa). This week against the Vikings, the Cougars managed 193 yards and punted seven times.
The Vikings (4-0) are back on the road next weekend as they tangle with MSFA Midwest opponent No. 5 Saint Xavier in Chicago, Ill.
