KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The top-four teams locked down their positions, led by No. 1 Concordia (Calif.), in the fourth regular-season edition of the 2013 Tachikara-NAIA Volleyball Coaches' Top 25 poll, the national office announced Tuesday. The Eagles gathered their ninth-straight top ranking after posting 653 total points and 22-of-23 first-place votes. Concordia is followed in the same order as last week's Top 25: No. 2 Texas at Brownsville, No. 3 Biola (Calif.), and No. 4 Madonna (Mich.).
Concordia is riding one of the NAIA's longest all-time win streaks, currently at 49-straight, as the squad heads into a Tuesday’s Top 25 matchup against No. 20 Vanguard (Calif.). The Eagles are 11-0 on the season and have not lost since Dec. 3, 2011 in the NAIA National Championship final against Texas at Brownsville. The win streak is currently No. 4 in the NAIA record book.
For the fourth-straight time, Texas at Brownsville is in the No. 2 spot. The Ocelots collected 632 total points and earned the remaining first-place vote. Texas at Brownsville is 12-0 on the year heading into Tuesday’s contest against unranked Our Lady of the Lake (Texas).
No. 3 Biola posted 611 points and holds steady in the ranking thanks to a 12-0 start. Setter Gracee Gallarda leads an offense that ranks fourth in the NAIA in assists per set (13.05) and seventh in kills per set (13.8). The Eagles take on unranked Arizona Christian on Friday before heading to No. 10 Westmont (Calif.) on Saturday.
In the fourth position, Madonna checks in with 590 total points. The Crusaders are tied for third in the NAIA with 20 wins and are one of only five undefeated programs. Madonna ranks among the top five nationally in assists per game (3rd, 13.1) and kills per game (3rd, 14.1).
MidAmerica Nazarene (Kan.), who is 15-1 this season, joins the top five with 456 points. The Pioneers will face off against Culver-Stockton (Mo.) on Tuesday evening.
For the first time since Preseason Top 25, No. 25 Cal State San Marcos finds itself in the ranking. The Cougars, who stand 18-7 on the year, are riding a five-match win streak heading into Tuesday's contest against La Sierra (Calif.). One of those wins was against then-No. 9 Westmont (Calif.) on Sept. 17.
Viterbo (Wis.) (No. 24) falls out this week as the V-Hawks have gone 4-3 in their last seven matches.
No. 16 The Master's (Calif.) improved five spots, which marked the best jump within the poll. The Mustangs improved to 12-3 on the year with a 3-2 win (25-15, 20-25, 26-28, 25-17, 15-9) over then-No. 19 Vanguard (Calif.) on Sept. 28.
Thirteen of 23 conferences are represented throughout the Top 25, led by the Golden State Athletic Conference with five ranked teams, Concordia, Biola, No. 10 Westmont, The Master's and No. 20 Vanguard. The Great Plains Athletic Conference lands four programs in the poll.
The poll was voted upon by a panel of head coaches representing each of the conferences and independents. The fifth regular-season Top 25 will be announced Oct. 8.
