Indianapolis, Ind. - Loyola University (La.) New Orleans women's basketball senior Jasmine Brewer has been named as one of only ten women's college basketball players in the country to the 2014 Allstate WBCA Good Works Team.

In its second year, this preeminent community service honor recognizes college basketball players who have made a commitment to improving their communities and the lives of others.  The Allstate NABC and WBCA Good Works Teams  shine a light on the positive impact these student-athletes have off the court and in their communities.

While many view summer as a time for rest and relaxation, Brewer takes advantage of the offseason by giving back. She spent three weeks in Belize as an Ignacio volunteer where she coordinated and led sports camps for children. During her time there, she also acted as a student teacher for nine and ten year olds in Dangriga. Additionally, she has mentored young people through her service as a volunteer tutor at Boys Hope Girls Hope, a basketball instructor at Recreate (an afterschool program in the Uptown New Orleans area), and recently addressed the students at Sci Academy on the importance of education.

"We can make the greatest impact on our society by helping children, as they are our future leaders," said Brewer. "I was fortunate enough to have people take interest in me when I was young and serve as mentors along my path to Loyola. It's an honor to be recognized for this service and I look forward to shaping these experiences into a career after graduation."

Brewer's desire to help children has reached past her volunteer work.
She has extensive experience serving as a camp counselor, most notably at Loyola's Day Camp and at Newman School. She also worked at the Whelan Daycare Center as a teacher's assistant. While there, she assisted with classroom activities and organization. All throughout her career as a Loyola women's basketball player, Brewer has dedicated a generous amount of time, energy and loyalty to causes in which she takes sincere care and pride.

In addition to being a leader in the community, Brewer has also excelled on the court. She is a three-time SSAC All-Conference Team member, two-time All-Louisiana Third Team selection, an SSAC All-Academic Team member and an NAIA Champions of Character honoree. This season, she received SSAC Women's Basketball Player of the Week and a National Jesuit Player of the Week Honorable Mention. She has notched six double-doubles and leads her squad in points, rebounds and steals per game. She ranks third on Loyola's all-time individual career rebounding list, sixth in individual career scoring and ninth in individual career steals. She sits fifth in Division I in field goal percentage (55.6) and 23rd in offensive rebounds per game (3.62).

"I'm very proud that Jasmine was one of the recipients of this award, and I think she's very deserving," said Loyola women's basketball head coach Kellie Kennedy. "In so many ways, she's such a great representative of our women's basketball program and what we take pride in at Loyola University. Being a Jesuit university, giving back to the community is an important aspect of our philosophy."

The Allstate NABC and WBCA Good Works Teams are each made up of 10 student-athletes; five from the NCAA  Division I and five from NCAA Divisions II, III and the NAIA. The final team rosters were chosen by prestigious voting panels comprised of former coaches, student-athletes and media members.

The following nine women round out the 2014 Allstate WBCA Good Works Team:
NCAA -  Kastine Evans (Kentucky), Alyssa Englert (Hartford), NeTanya Jones (McNeese State), Courtney Moses (Purdue), Shayla Bivins (Georgia Institute of Technology); NAIA - Amy Loya (Union), Michel'le St. Pierre (Worcester State), Alexandra Wilkinson (Minnesota-Mankato), Alexa Baltes (Illinois Wesleyan).
