Top 25 Poll - No. 1

September 06, 2011

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -Azusa Pacific (Calif.) captured all but one first-place vote to take the No. 1 spot in the first regular-season edition of the 2011 NAIA Women's Soccer Coaches' Top 25 Poll, the national office announced Tuesday. The Cougars, who were listed second in the preseason poll with just one first-place nod, were awarded 19 first-place votes for 560 points. The move to the top spot is the first for Azusa Pacific since owning the No. 1-ranking in the Sept. 21, 2010, poll.

Lee (Tenn.) suffered a 2-1 setback to Azusa Pacific on Aug. 27, therefore, slipping into the No. 2-spot. The Lady Flames garnered the remaining first-place vote for 540 points. Both Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) and Robert Morris (Ill.) climbed three spots from its preseason ranking, checking in at Nos. 3 and 4, respectively. Fifth-ranked Martin Methodist (Tenn.) rounds out the top-five teams with 455 points.

No. 24 Northwood (Fla.) and No. 25 Point Loma Nazarene (Calif.) cracked into the Top 25, replacing previously ranked No. 24 Benedictine (Kan.) and No. 25 Auburn Montgomery (Ala.). Just one match into the season, Northwood upended previously-ranked No. 13 Mobile (Ala.), 3-2, on Sept. 3, to earn its first national recognition since being ranked 24th on Nov. 9, 2010. The loss sent the Rams back to No. 22 this week. Point Loma Nazarene is off to a perfect start at 5-0-0, outscoring foes 13-2. It is the first time since the Oct. 26, 2010, poll that the Sea Lions have been ranked, when they were listed 25th.

Fifteen conferences/independents/unaffiliated groups are represented throughout the Top 25, led by four squads from the Golden State Athletic Conference: Azusa Pacific, No. 6 The Master’s (Calif.), No. 9 Concordia (Calif.) and Point Loma Nazarene. The Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Southern States Athletic Conference each boast a trio of ranked teams.

The poll was voted upon by a panel of head coaches representing each of the conferences/independents/unaffiliated groups. The next regular-season Top 25 poll will be announced on Sept. 12.
