KANSAS CITY, Mo. -For the second time in as many weeks, Azusa Pacific (Calif.) was unanimously voted as the No. 1 team in the 2011 NAIA Women's Soccer Coaches' Top 25 Poll, the national office announced Tuesday. The Cougars were awarded all 21 first-place votes for 591 points in the fourth edition of the poll. Azusa Pacific, who has been inactive since Sept. 7, sports a 4-0-1 record and will next take to the field against Point Loma Nazarene (Calif.) in its Golden State Athletic Conference (GSAC) opener.
Second-ranked Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) and third-ranked Lee (Tenn.) retained their spot on the poll with 572 and 553 points, respectively. Sliding up one spot each were No. 4 Concordia (Ore.) (524 points) and No. 5 Concordia (Calif.) (518 points). After starting the season at No. 20 in the Preseason Poll, Concordia (Calif.) has climbed into the top five for the first time in program history, dating back to 1999.
Only three teams, Azusa Pacific, Lindsey Wilson and Lee, maintained their position among the Top 25 as 18 squads shifted rank and a trio of newcomers joined the poll. At No. 22, SCAD Savannah (Ga.) is making its first appearance since being listed 15th in the 2009 Preseason Poll. Benedictine (Kan.) earned the No. 24 spot to start its 2011 campaign, but failed to earn rank in the first three regular-season announcements. The Lady Ravens have rattled off eight wins since dropping their season opener to land at No. 24 this week. Judson (Ill.) (6-1-1) checks in at No. 25 to garner the program’s first-ever national ranking, dating back to 1999, after knocking off then-No. 4 Robert Morris (Ill.), 2-1, on Sept. 24. With the loss, the Lady Eagles plummeted back 16 spots to No. 20.
Falling out of the poll were Westminster (Utah), Graceland (Iowa) and Indiana Wesleyan.
No. 10 Point Loma Nazarene made the biggest improvement within the poll, jumping eight spots from last week’s No. 18 ranking. Ninth-ranked Olivet Nazarene (Ill.), No. 14 Northwood (Fla.) and No. 16 Trinity Christian (Ill.) also made leaps of six-or more spots.
Fourteen conferences/independents/unaffiliated groups are represented throughout the Top 25, led by four squads from the GSAC and Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC). Azusa Pacific, Concordia (Calif.), Point Loma Nazarene and No. 15 The Master’s (Calif.) hail from the GSAC, while Olivet Nazarene, Trinity Christian, Robert Morris and Judson are listed for the CCAC.
The poll was voted upon by a panel of head coaches representing each of the conferences/independents/unaffiliated groups. The next regular-season Top 25 poll will be announced on Oct. 4. The first edition of the NAIA Women’s Soccer Modified Ratings Percentage Index (MRPI) will be released Wednesday by 5 p.m. CDT.
