Top 25 Poll - No. 8

October 25, 2011
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Texas at Brownsville continues to breeze through the Red River Athletic Conference and remains the unanimous No. 1 choice for the seventh-consecutive week in the Tachikara-NAIA Volleyball Coaches’ Top 25 Poll, the national office announced Tuesday. The Scorpions collected all 22 first-place votes and 622 points to top the eighth regular-season edition of the poll. Texas at Brownsville has now won its last 23 sets dating back to Sept. 23 and is a perfect 22-0 overall.

The Scorpions will meet No. 2 Concordia (Calif.) on Oct. 29 in what will be the second match-up between the NAIA’s top-two teams this season. Texas at Brownsville took down then-No. 2 Lee (Tenn.) in straight-sets on Sept. 9. The Scorpions will also play No. 14 Biola (Calif.) on Oct. 27 and No. 8 Fresno Pacific (Calif.) on Oct. 28 in a tour of Golden State Athletic Conference (GSAC) schools.

The rest of the top 10 is also identical to last week’s edition. Concordia, who has won 24-straight matches, garnered 601 points. The Eagles sit atop the GSAC with an unblemished 12-0 league mark. No. 3 Columbia (Mo.) earned 582 points, No. 4 Lee (Tenn.) notched 561 points and No. 5 Embry-Riddle (Fla.) tallied 536 points to round out the top five.

No team made a significant jump within the rankings as only four Top-25 squads improved their positions. No. 11 Rocky Mountain (Mont.), No. 15 Southern Oregon, No. 21 Oklahoma Baptist and No. 23 Grand View (Iowa) all moved up one spot. Rocky Mountain, the second-place squad in the Frontier Conference, got a boost from a 25-19, 25-21, 25-21 win over then-No. 23 Carroll (Mont.) in the NAIA Match of the Week on Oct. 21. No. 12 Vanguard (Calif.), No. 16 Cal State San Marcos, No. 22 Bellevue (Neb.) and No. 24 Carroll were the only teams within the Top 25 to drop as each went back one spot.

Saint Xavier (Ill.), No. 25 one week ago, fell out of the rankings after suffering a 17-25, 25-23, 21-25, 23-25 defeat to St. Ambrose (Iowa) on Oct. 21. College of the Ozarks (Mo.), who checks in at No. 25, is the only school new to the poll this week. The Bobcats are 9-0 in Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference play and have won five-straight matches.

The GSAC retained six members in the rankings for the sixth-consecutive week and again leads all leagues. The GSAC is represented by Concordia, No. 7 Azusa Pacific (Calif.), Fresno Pacific, Vanguard, Biola and No. 17 Point Loma Nazarene (Calif.). The Frontier Conference stands alone in second with three ranked squads: No. 9 Lewis-Clark State (Idaho), Rocky Mountain and Carroll. Five conferences placed two schools in the poll.

The poll was voted upon by a panel of head coaches representing each of the conferences and independents. The next poll will be announced on Nov. 1.
