Rules FAQ: Institutional Health Insurance
Institutional Health Insurance & Financial Assistance (NAIA Bylaws Article II, Section B)
The NEC recently reviewed the application of Article II, Section B. In its interpretation, the NEC confirmed that the premium for primary care insurance for a student-athlete is not a mandatory fee and cannot be covered within the financial assistance a member institution can provide its student-athletes. In other words, the NEC interprets Article II, Section B, Item 2 to mean only mandatory fees required for courses in which the student is enrolled rather than any mandatory fee the institution may assess the student. The rationale for this decision is based primarily on two facts:
1. The Bylaw explicitly outlines the items it covers; and
2. The Bylaw explicitly states that further assistance to a student, other than that listed, is prohibited.
