DECATUR, Ala. - Fifth-seeded Point Loma Nazarene (Calif.) avoided the upset, while 11th-seeded Embry-Riddle (Fla.) knocked off No. 6 Olivet Nazarene (Ill.) in Second Round action of the 2011 NAIA Women's Soccer National Championship Tuesday at Jack Allen Recreation Complex. No. 7-seeded Mobile (Ala.) and No. 8 Concordia (Ore.) were also victorious to earn a spot in Wednesday's Quarterfinals.
Point Loma Nazarene advanced past unseeded Westmont (Calif.) on penalty kicks, 2-1, after playing to a 2-2 double-overtime draw. Leeza Henderson netted the first penalty kick to give the Warriors a 1-0 advantage, only to have Point Loma Nazarene's Kaycie Hanlin equal it at 1-1. Westmont missed its opportunity to take an edge and the Sea Lions capitalized. Katie Pedlowe delivered the decisive kick to send Point Loma Nazarene into a Quarterfinal date with No. 13 Baker (Kan.) at 4 p.m. CST.
In less than 90 seconds, Bjorg Olafs and Krizzy Menez each sent a ball to the back of the net for a 2-0 halftime lead and Valerie Obita scored another goal as Embry-Riddle upset sixth-seeded Olivet Nazarene (Ill.), 3-1. The Eagles advance to the Quarterfinals for the first time in eight national championship appearances, where they will face three-time defending national champion Lee (Tenn.) at 11 a.m. It will be the second match this season between the two teams, previously meeting on Sept. 15 with the Lady Flames taking a 3-0 decision.
Jesslyn Fagundes' hat trick led seventh-seeded Mobile (Ala.) past unseeded Graceland (Iowa), 4-1. Kassie Ruff was credited with the assists on Fagundes' first two goals and Christy Lachappelle dished to Fagundes on the third score. Lacheppelle's header off of a corner kick found Rebekah Counce for the Lady Rams' game-winning goal. They will square off against second-seeded Azusa Pacific (Calif.) in the Quarterfinals at 1:30 p.m.
Eighth-seeded Concordia closed out the Second Round with a 2-0 shutout of No. 9-seeded Spring Arbor (Mich.). The Cavaliers received goals from Brittany Orr and Tahlia O'Loughlin to push their record to 17-4-1 and a Quarterfinal matchup with top-seeded Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) at 6:30 p.m.
