KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Shorter (Ga.) reclaimed the No. 1 position in the eighth regular-season edition of the 2011 - 12 NAIA Division I Men's Basketball Coaches' Top 25 Poll, the NAIA announced Monday. The Hawks were one of 22 programs to shift rank this week. Former No. 1 Robert Morris (Ill.) dropped to third after a loss to unranked Calumet (Ind.) on Feb. 8.
The nation's only one-loss team in men's basketball, Shorter sports a 24-1 record. The Hawks collected 10 of the possible 12 first-place votes to go along with 311 total points. With a perfect 14-0 Southern States Athletic Conference record, Shorter leads the league by two games with five regular season contests remaining. The Hawks face a stiff road test on Monday against No. 4 Southern Poly (Ga.).
No. 2 Oklahoma Baptist slid up one spot with one first-place nod and 302 points. The 79-69 win over Science & Arts (Okla.) on Feb. 11 was the Bison' seventh in their last eight games.
The 92-85 loss to Calumet halted a nine-game winning streak for Robert Morris. The Eagles still earned the final first-place vote to post 292 points. Robert Morris falls outside the top-two for the first time since Jan. 16.
Southern Poly recorded 281 total points and will enjoy its fifth-straight week in the top-five. Moving up one position is No. 5 Rogers State (Okla.). With 268 points, the Hillcats are tied for their highest ranking this year.
Powered by a 4-1 record in its last five games, No. 24 Cumberlands (Ky.) is the surprise team. The Patriots were last ranked on Dec. 12, 2011 in the 12th position.
Pikeville (Ky.) (No. 22) and The Master's (Calif.) (No. 25 - tie) both fell out this week.
All 12 of the conferences and unaffiliated groups are represented this week The Sooner Athletic Conference is the leader with four programs in the Top 25: Oklahoma Baptist, Rogers State, No. 13 John Brown (Ark.) and No. 23 Southern Nazarene (Okla.). The Golden State Athletic Conference, Mid-South Conference, Red River Athletic Conference and Southern States Athletic Conference each landed a trio of ranked teams.
The poll was voted upon by a panel of head coaches representing each of the conference and unaffiliated groups. The next Division I Men's Basketball Coaches' Top 25 Poll will be announced on Feb. 20.
NOTES: (All information dates back to 2000 - 01 season) Through nine polls (including preseason) this year, there have been five different teams to boast the No. 1 ranking (Concordia (Calif.), Oklahoma Baptist, Pikeville (Ky.), Robert Morris (Ill.) and Shorter (Ga.))... No. 18 Tougaloo (Miss.) holds the longest active winning streak at 11-straight... There have been 25 different teams to be ranked the top team, and within that group, 16 teams with multiple No. 1 rankings... No. 1 Shorter leads the NAIA with 24 wins... Shorter had never been ranked inside the top 10 prior to this year... There have been 39 different teams to be ranked at some point this season... No. 9 Mountain State (W.Va.) boasts the longest active stretch of consecutive rankings with 142-straight weeks; No. 10 Georgetown (Ky.) is next with 74, followed by No. 12 Texas Wesleyan at 51 and No. 2 Oklahoma Baptist at 46... Mountain State has the most No. 1 rankings since 2000 - the Cougars have been No. 1 a total of 48 times since 2000, which marks the highest total of any program in that span... Robert Morris is second with 24 No. 1s and Concordia (Calif.) and Georgetown have sported 10 top mentions ... Robert Morris is the only program to start and end a season ranked No. 1, doing so during the 2006 - 07 season.
