Sioux City, Iowa – (Box Score) An attacking Briar Cliff (Iowa) defense paved the way for a blowout victory over St. Thomas (Fla.) on Wednesday in the first round of the State Farm-NAIA Division II National Championship. The Chargers, who lead the nation in scoring, played in front of large crowd in their own backyard at the Tyson Events Center in Sioux City, Iowa.

Coming off the bench, Chista Stewart paced the Chargers with 19 points on 8-for-10 shooting. Sara Reeves (12), Megan Salcedo (12) and Ashley Zobel (11) also placed in double-figures in scoring. On the defensive end, 10 different Chargers recorded at least one steal, led by four from Zobel.

Nickerline Montina posted a team-high 15 points for St. Thomas while Dannisha Pierce had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. However, the Bobcats could not overcome their 35 turnovers, 25 of which came in a sloppy first. St. Thomas trailed 38-16 at the break.

Briar Cliff (23-9) moves on to the second round to play Davenport (Mich.) on Friday at 3:30 p.m. Davenport defeated Cal State San Marcos 84-63 earlier on Wednesday.
