Sioux City, Iowa – (Box Score) Star junior guard Abby Fawcett got hot early and lifted Friends (Kan.) to its first-ever tournament victory on Wednesday. Fawcett drilled five first-half 3-pointers, allowing the Falcons to fly to a 69-54 win over College of Idaho in the first round of the State Farm-NAIA Division II Women’s Basketball National Championship in Sioux City, Iowa.

Friends had been 0-for-3 in its three previous first-round games, including a 64-61 loss to Judson (Ill.) in its most recent appearance in 2001. This time around, Fawcett made sure the Falcons would not go home early. She finished with a game-high 25 points on 9-of-21 from the field. She also added six rebounds and five assists.

As a team, Friends shot 45.6 percent from the field and held sixteenth-ranked College of Idaho to 33.3 percent shooting. Felicity Jones led the Lady Yotes with 11 points. Laura Geis was their only other double-figure scorer. She totaled 10 points.

Friends (24-9) will go for the school’s second tournament win on Friday at 10:15 a.m. as it awaits the winner of Indiana Wesleyan and Menlo (Calif.).
