POINT LOOKOUT, Mo. -- (Updated bracket) Fourth-seed McPherson (Kan.) needed overtime to defeat a resilient Dakota State (S.D.) team, 69-63, in the final game of the first day of the 2012 NAIA Division II Men's Basketball National Championship. The 2012 event is being played at the College of the Ozarks in Point Lookout, Mo.
Tied at 60 heading into the overtime period, McPherson scored all nine of its points in the extra period from the foul line, eight by senior guard Aaron Frazier. The Bulldogs also forced four turnovers and limited Dakota State to just one field goal in the extra time.
Frazier scored a game-high 26 points and pulled down 11 rebounds to lead McPherson. Jordan Crawford also recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 boards. Both Jake Reinhardt and Samson Shivers netted 10 points each. The Bulldogs shot 40% for the game but went just 1-for-10 from beyond the arc.
Dakota State was led by both Keith Biggers and Spencer Adams with 15 points while Donald Stewart added 10. The Trojans shot 41% for the game and struggled from the foul line, shooting 33% (4-for-15). Making its second-ever trip to the national tournament and first since 1992, Dakota State closes the season with a 18-13 record.
McPherson won its ninth-straight game and improved to 31-3 on the year. The Bulldogs will play No. 12 Saint Thomas (Fla.) in the second round on Friday at 10:15 a.m. CST
