SIOUX CITY, Iowa – (Box Score) A rematch of last year’s second round meeting between Briar Cliff (Iowa) and Davenport (Mich.) provided a much more favorable result for the hometown Chargers. The Lady Panthers cruised to an 84-61 victory over Briar Cliff in the same round one year ago. This time around, The Chargers eked out a nip-and-tuck 67-65 win to advance to the quarterfinals of the State Farm-NAIA Division II Women’s Basketball National Championship.
A layup by Abby Hengesbach of Davenport with five seconds remaining in the game tied the score at 65, making an extra stanza likely. However, an ill-advised foul in the backcourt on the ensuing inbounds with 3.2 seconds left put Briar Cliff’s Kylie Dilla at the charity stripe, where she connected on a pair of free throws. Following a timeout, the Lady Panthers’ Karli Harris threw up a desperation 3-pointer at the buzzer that rimmed out.
The Chargers featured a balanced attack that saw six players score at least eight points, led by 11 apiece from Dilla and Megan Salcedo. Sara Reeves and Mattie Murren added 10 points each for the victors, who shot just 30.4 percent from the field.
Briar Cliff made up for a poor shooting night from the field by draining 20-of-25 free throws and by gaining a 53-36 edge on the glass.
Abby Neff paced Davenport with 18 points on the strength of an efficient 8-for-13 shooting night.Karlee Despres posted 10 points, nine rebounds and seven assists.
The Chargers (24-9) will await the winner of Morningside (Iowa) and Mount Mercy (Iowa) in a quarterfinal matchup at 6 p.m. CST on Saturday.
