FRANKFORT, Ky. – (Box Score ; Coaches Interview) Tugce Canitez scored 19 points and had 17 rebounds to lead Westmont (Calif.) past Lyon (Ark.) 59-57 Thursday morning in the opening round of the 2012 NAIA Division I Women’s Basketball National Championship presented by Kentuckytourism.com.
The win sends the Warriors into tomorrow’s second round where they will meet Saint Xavier (Ill.) on Friday at 12:30 p.m. EST at the Frankfort Convention Center.
Canitez, a 6-2 forward from Izmir, Turkey, had seven offensive rebounds and also let her team with four assists in the win.
Westmont (30-3) looked as if it would make quick work of Lyon when it scored the first 11 points of the game and held the Scots scoreless for the first 4:59 of the game. The lead fluctuated between three and nine the remainder of the half, with Westmont – shooting only 27 percent – leading 23-18.
The Warriors used a 10-2 run early in the second half to push the lead back to 11 at 33-22 on a Canitez basket with 14:51 to play. The lead was 11 again at 57-46 with only 3:24 left before the Scots began their comeback.
Four players scored for Lyon down the stretch, and back-to-back 3-point baskets by Erin Roush and Phagen Altom ended an 11-1 run that brought it within one with one second left in the game.
The Warriors finished the game sinking only 33.3 percent of its shots and 26.9 percent from the arc. In addition, they were only 8-of-17 from the line. However, they dominated the glass 49-34 and had 22 rebounds on the offensive end.
Canitez was joined in double figures by Katie Kittle with 18 and Aubrey Lincoln with 11.
Lyon (20-12) nailed 50 percent of its second-half shots and was 6-of-10 from the arc. The Scots were paced by Altom’s 23 markers. Lauren Ramsey tossed in 10.
