Women's Golf National Championships - Day 1 Recap
GREENEVILLE, Tenn. - (Team Results | Individual Results) Shorter (Ga.) leads the field as a team after the first round of the 2012 NAIA Women's Golf National Championships, which is being contested at Link Hills Country Club.
Shorter was led on the day by Pauline Schopp, who is tied for the individual lead after shooting a 2-under 71 (37-34), as the Lady Hawks posted a 298 (+6) as a team to open a three shot lead over second place Lubbock Christian (Texas), who shot 301 (+9) as a squad.
Schopp is tied for the individual lead with Thomas' (Ga.) Jessica Macphee, who also shot a 71 (35-36) in the afternoon grouping.
Behind Schopp and Macphee is a pair of players who posted a pair of opening round scores of one-under 72's, in Oklahoma's Christian's Morgan Dockery (35-37), and College of Idaho's Trish Gibbens. Gibbens got off to a hot start to begin the tournament, as she raced out to a front nine 33 (-4) in one of the first groupings out on the day.
Sitting behind the top four on the individual leader board is a log jam tied for fifth place, as seven players all posted even round scores of 73 in their opening round of the Championships. Behind that, four players sit in a tie for 12th after shooting 74 (+1) on the day
On the team end, Oklahoma Christian sits in third after registering a 302 (+10), with William Woods (Mo.) positioned in fourth just a shot behind at 303 (+11). Northwood (Fla.) and Wayland Baptist (Tex.) round out the top five on the team leader board, as both posted a first round score of 304 (+12).
