NAIA Women’s Cross Country Coaches’ Top 25 Poll – No. 2
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - British Columbia tops the second edition of the 2012 NAIA Women's Cross Country Coaches' Top 25 Poll, the national office announced Wednesday. The Thunderbirds collected 19 first place votes and received 560 to earn its first-ever No. 1 ranking. In their first meet of the year, British Columbia finished fourth, behind three NCAA Division I schools-Washington, Fresno State (Calif.) and Idaho.
After two weeks at the top spot, Cal State San Marcos falls to No. 2 as they tallied 537 points. Collecting the last first place vote was Olivet Nazarene (Ill.) on its way to hold the No. 3 ranking. The Tigers collected 526 points. College of Idaho comes in at No. 4 receiving 506 points, while Biola (Calif.) rounds out the top five with 487 points.
Joining the Top 25 is Oklahoma Baptist as they are tied with Cumberlands (Ky.) for the No. 24 ranking. The Bison replace Indiana Wesleyan (No. 25) who fell out of the poll.
Aquinas (Mich.) made the biggest jump in the second week of the poll moving from No. 14 to No. 10. The Saints placed 13th out of 34 teams last weekend at the National Catholic Invitational held in South Bend, Ind.
Twelve conferences/independents/unaffiliated groups are represented throughout the Top 25, led by the Golden State Athletic Conference with four ranked teams, followed by the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference, Cascade Collegiate Conference and the Frontier Conference with three teams each.
The poll was voted upon by a panel of head coaches representing each of the conferences/independents/unaffiliated groups. The third regular-season Top 25 poll will be announced on Sept. 26.
Notes: (All information dates back to 1999) Cal State San Marcos joins Simon Fraser (B.C.) as the only teams to start the season ranked No. 1 and go on to win the national championship ... Simon Fraser accomplished this in 2004, 05, 06 and 07 ... There have been four seasons in which a squad held the No. 1-ranking for an entire season: 2007 - Simon Fraser, 2006 - Simon Fraser, 2005 - Simon Fraser and 2003 - Northwest (Wash.) ... No. 9 Lewis-Clark State (Idaho) is the only school that has made 100 or more consecutive appearances in the Top 25 with 113, dating back to Sept. 21, 2001... Cal State San Marcos is tied for sixth with seven total No. 1 rankings... Former NAIA Member Simon Fraser (B.C.) has the most No. 1 rankings with 40.... British Columbia earned their first No. 1 ranking this week... Six teams held their place in this week's poll.
