2012 NAIA Men’s Cross Country Coaches’ Top 25 Poll – No. 7
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Southern Oregon continues to hold steady at the top of the 2012 NAIA Men's Cross Country Coaches' Top 25 Poll, the national office announced Wednesday. The Raiders received 18-of-21 first place votes and tallied 588 points to earn the No. 1 ranking for the eighth-straight week.
Last week, Southern Oregon finished second in the Beaver (Ore.) Classic. The Raiders were led by Eric Avila who finished second in the race.
Receiving one first-place vote and remains at No. 2 is British Columbia with 563 points. No. 3 St. Francis (Ill.) notched the last two first-place votes and earned 551 points. Oklahoma Baptist moves up one spot, and into a tie for the No. 4 ranking with Cal State San Marcos. The Bison and Cougars both collected 532 points.
Jumping from No. 15 to No. 9 is Wayland Baptist (Texas), which is the biggest movement in the polls. The Pioneers finished second as a team, behind only No. 4 Oklahoma Baptist, in the NAIA Mid-States Classic (Kan.). Wayland Baptist was paced by a fifth place finish by Hildon Boen.
Making the jump into the Top 25 this week is Lubbock Christian (Texas). This is its first appearance in the Coaches' Top 25 since 1999. The Chaps placed fifth last weekend in the NAIA Mid-States Classic and were led by Izzy Miranda's eighth place finish.
Falling from the rankings is Berea (Ky.) (No. 25).
Thirteen conferences/independents/unaffiliated groups are represented throughout the Top 25, led by the Cascade Collegiate Conference with four teams. Representing the Cascade are Southern Oregon, No. 11 College of Idaho, No. 15 Eastern Oregon, and No. 22 Northwest Christian (Ore.).
The poll was voted upon by a panel of head coaches representing each of the conferences/independents/unaffiliated groups. The final regular-season Top 25 poll will be announced on Nov. 4.
Notes: (All information dates back to 1999) Four teams have started the season ranked No. 1 and gone on to win the national championship: Former NAIA Member Malone (Ohio) - 2007, 08 and 09; Virginia Intermont - 2005 and 06; Former NAIA Member Minot State (N.D.) - 2002; Life (Ga.) - 1999 and 2000... There has only been one program that has been able to maintain the No. 1 ranking for an entire season with Malone accomplishing the feat in 2007 and 08... Southern Oregon has been ranked No. 1 18 times which ranks them tied for second all-time with Life...Malone has been ranked No. 1 the most with 38 selections... Aquinas (Mich.) has been ranked in the Top 25 for 123-consecutive weeks dating back to Aug. 22, 2000... 35 teams have been ranked in the Top 25 this season.
