2012 Tachikara-NAIA Volleyball Coaches’ Top 25 Poll – No. 9

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - For the first time in the 2012 season, there is a new No. 1, as Concordia (Calif.) comes in at the top spot in the ninth edition of the 2012 Tachikara-NAIA Volleyball Coaches' Top 25 poll, the national office announced Tuesday. The Eagles received all 23 first-place votes and garnered 653 points. This is Concordia's first No. 1 ranking since November 11, 2011.

Concordia extended its winning streak to NAIA-best 26 games after a 3-0 week. The Eagles defeated No. 12 Westmont (Calif.), 3-0, (25-13, 25-19, 25-13), Arizona Christian, 3-0, (25-9, 25-13, 25-13) and then-No. 1 Texas at Brownsville 3-2, (24-26, 30-28, 25-20, 20-25, 15-12) in the NAIA Match of the Week. Brooke Marino led the Eagles with a game-high 22 kills and a team-high 26 digs against the Scropions.

With the loss to Concordia, Texas at Brownsville falls one spot to No. 2 earning 632 points. Columbia (Mo.) and Biola (Calif.) remain at No. 3 and 4 after collecting 611 and 590 points, respectfully. Rounding out the top five is No. 5 Hastings (Neb.) captured 567 points. This is the Broncos first top 5 ranking since Aug. 15, 2000 when they were ranked No. 2.

For the first time since 2000, No. 25 Point Park (Pa.) joins the Top 25. The Pioneers were 3-2 last week with victories over then-No. 5 Lee (Tenn.), 3-2, (25-23, 25-22, 23-25, 15-25, 15-2), Taylor (Ind.), 3-0, (25-22, 25-22, 25-22) and St. Louis Pharmacy (Mo.), 3-0, (25-17, 25-10, 25-17).

Seven schools moved up in the Top 25 with Cal State San Marcos being the biggest mover moving up two spots, from No. 18 to No. 16. Cal State San Marcos dropped its first match of the week to NCAA Division II Azusa Pacific (Calif.), 3-2, (25-27, 25-20, 25-15, 15-25, 10-15) before rebounding to win its next four against La Sierra (Calif.), 3-0, (25-19, 25-20, 25-22), William Jessup (Calif.), 3-0 (25-11, 25-10, 25-11), Embry-Riddle (Ariz.), 3-0, (25-22, 25-11, 25-18) and Johnson & Wales (Colo.), 3-0 (25-18, 25-13, 25-13).

Falling out of the poll this week is Park (Mo.) (No.25).

Sixteen conferences/independents/unaffiliated groups are represented throughout the Top 25, led by the Golden State Athletic Conference (GSAC) with five ranked teams. Representing the GSAC is Concordia, Biola, No. 7 The Master's (Calif.), No. 12 Westmont and No. 21 Vanguard (Calif.).

The poll was voted upon by a panel of head coaches representing each of the conferences and Independents. The tenth regular-season poll will be announced on Nov. 6.

Notes: (All information as of 2000) Concordia (Calif.) makes its fourth appearance at the No. 1 ranking... Texas at Brownsville's 18 No. 1 rankings are the fourth-most all-time ... Former member, Fresno Pacific (Calif.), has the most No. 1 appearances with 70, followed by former member National American (S.D.) with 32 and Columbia (Mo.) with 20...Texas at Brownsville has been ranked No. 1 in 18 of the last 22 weeks... Concordia has the longest active streak in the Top 25 as it has been ranked for 82-straight polls; right behind Concordia is Biola (Calif.) with 81-straight polls... ... There has only been one program that has been able to maintain the No. 1 ranking for an entire season with Fresno Pacific accomplishing the feat in 2004, 2008 and 2009... No. 14 is the highest Indiana East has been ranked...Hastings (Neb.) has earned a top five ranking for the first time since Aug. 15, 2000.
