KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Indiana Wesleyan remains at No. 1 in the 2012-13 NAIA Division II Women's Basketball Coaches' Top 25, the national office announced Tuesday. The Wildcats collected 12 first-place votes and 343 points in the sixth regular-season edition.
Indiana Wesleyan suffered its first loss of the season and had its NAIA-best 20-game winning streak snapped when then-No. 9 Saint Francis (Ind.) defeated the Wildcats, 62-55, on Jan. 16. Indiana Wesleyan bounced back three days later with a 69-59 victory over Marian (Ind.). This is the third-straight week the Wildcats have been No. 1.
Concordia (Neb.) comes in at No. 2 for the third-consecutive week collecting 331 points. The Bulldogs remain No. 2 after falling to Dakota Wesleyan, 72-62, on Jan. 20. Moving up one position to No. 3 is Morningside (Iowa) with 310 points. The Mustangs were victorious over Northwestern (Iowa), 63-60, on Jan. 16 and Doane (Neb.), 78-71, on Jan. 19. Falling one spot to No. 4 is College of the Ozarks (Mo.), who tallied 300 points. The Bobcats had their 24-consecutive Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference winning streak snapped on Jan. 18. No. 5 Eastern Oregon rounds out the top five collecting the last first-place vote and notching 296 points. This is the Mountaineers highest ranking this season.
Making the biggest jump this week was Saint Xavier (Ill.), moving from No. 12 to No. 8, and Menlo (Calif.), jumping to No. 21 from No. 25. Both teams were 2-0 last week. Saint Xavier went 2-0 last week with victories over Trinity Christian (Ill.), 99-58, on Jan. 16. Three days later, the Cougars knocked off then-No. 14 Cardinal Stritch (Wis.), 67-60. Menlo, won both of its contests by an average of 40 points last week. The Oaks started off the week with an 85-52 victory over Cal Maritime on Jan. 17 and finished with an 87-41 win over Pacific Union (Calif.).
Joining the Top 25 this week is No. 20 Mayville State (N.D.) and No. 24 Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.). Mayville State joins the Coaches' Poll for the first time since the 2007-08 Preseason Poll, while Dakota Wesleyan returns after missing one week. Mayville State went 1-1 last week with a victory over Valley City State (N.D.), 65-59, on Jan. 19 before falling to No. 14 Jamestown (N.D.), 79-61, a day later. The Comets' loss to Jamestown ended its 12 game-winning-streak. Dakota Wesleyan went 2-0 last week with victories over Dakota State (S.D.) and Concordia (Neb.). The Tigers defeated Dakota State, 78-69, on Jan. 16 and were victorious over No. 2 Concordia, 72-61, four days later.
Two teams fell out of the Top 25: Southwestern (Kan.) (No. 19) and Huntington (Ind.) (No. 24).
Eleven of the 13 Division II women's basketball conferences/independents are represented throughout the Top 25, led by the Great Plains Athletic Conference with five ranked teams. A trio of conferences follow with three teams each.
The poll was voted upon by a panel of head coaches representing each of the conferences and Independents. The seventh regular-season poll will be announced on Jan. 29.
Notes: (All information as of the 1999 - 2000 season) Indiana Wesleyan has appeared at the top of the poll on 28 occasions, the most of any program, followed by Morningside (Iowa) with 19... There have been 14 different teams to garner the No. 1 ranking all-time ... Three schools have spent an entire season at No. 1: Morningside in 2008-09, College of the Ozarks (Mo.) in 2007-08 and Saint Francis (Ind.) in 1999-2000... In the last 13 years, six teams that have been rated No. 1 in the preseason have gone on to win the national championship with the last being Northwestern (Iowa), which has accomplished the feat the last two years... Morningside (110) and College of the Ozarks (103) are the only teams who have been ranked in the Top 25 for over 100 consecutive weeks... Seventeen schools have been in the Coaches' Poll all season.
