Smith's 700th Career Win, Vikings Over AIB
Des Moines, Iowa - The Grand View women's basketball team helped head coach Garey Smith reach another major milestone in his coaching career. Tonight's win at cross-town rival AIB marked Smith's 700th career win. Smith is currently the winningest active NAIA Division II coach with an overall record of 700-440 and in his 37th season; 13th at Grand View.
"I have had a lot of good players over the years and the girls worked hard for tonight's win, but time to move on and get ready for the next one," said Smith in reaction to earning his 700th win.
The Eagles slowed the game down and hung around for longer than the Vikings would have liked. After playing five minutes of basketball, the score was just 7-2 in favor of AIB. Grand View tied the score at eight with ten minutes to play and eventually continue on to take control of the lead for the remainder of the first half. The Vikings would extend the lead to nine and the Eagles would fight to come within two at the break, 24-22.
Both teams exchanged baskets the majority of the second half. The Eagles would not let the Vikings get to far out in front, tying the score six different times.
Junior Pee Wee Porter (Des Moines, Iowa) went to the line with just 13 seconds left on the clock. After knocking down the first free throw, the Eagles grabbed the defensive rebound after missing the second. Porter gave the Vikings a two point cushion, 47-45.
The Eagles would get one more chance to tie or win the game with eight seconds to play. The shot went up from inside the paint and Porter came up big with the defensive rebound as the whistle blew calling Porter for the travel. AIB would get one more chance taking the ball out of bounds underneath their basket. A strong Viking defense did not allow a shot to get off and Grand View improved to 14-6 overall and 6-2 in conference play with the 47-45 win.
Senior Morgan Hamner (Des Moines, Iowa) recorded her fourth straight double-double with ten points and 15 rebounds. The Vikings held AIB to just 21 percent from the field and 22 percent from behind the arc.
Grand View is on the road Saturday, Feb. 2, to take on (RV) St. Ambrose (18-5). Ambrose is currently third in the MCC with a record of 5-3. The Vikings won 66-64 in overtime in the last outing between these two teams.
