NAIA Division II Women’s Basketball Coaches’ Top 25 – No. 8
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Indiana Wesleyan sits atop the 2012-13 NAIA Division II Women's Basketball Coaches' Top 25 Poll for the fifth-straight week, the national office announced Tuesday. The Wildcats collected 12-of-13 first-place votes and 343 points in the eighth regular-season edition.
Indiana Wesleyan is currently on a five-game win streak after defeating Huntington (Ind.), 56-54, on Jan. 30 and Spring Arbor (Mich.), 72-48, on Feb. 2. The Wildcats look to avenge its only loss of the season Wednesday night, when they host No. 3 Saint Francis (Ind.) in a battle for the top spot in the Crossroads League. Both teams are currently tied at 13-1. Indiana Wesleyan concludes the week with No. 15 Bethel (Ind.) Saturday.
College of the Ozarks (Mo.) holds steady at No. 2 with 323 points. Moving up one spot to No. 3 is Saint Francis, its highest ranking of the season, notching 314 points. Coming in tied at No. 4 is Eastern Oregon, who tallied the last first-place vote, and Concordia (Neb.), with 303 points each.
Roosevelt (Ill.) and Tabor (Kan.) made the biggest jumps in the poll this week as both teams moved ahead four spots. Roosevelt, who jumped from No. 18 to No. 14, defeated Trinity Christian (Ill.), 77-45, on Jan. 30 and then-No. 21 Cardinal Stritch (Wis.), 68-66, on Feb. 2. The Lakers have won five in-a-row. Tabor, who jumped from No. 25 to No. 21, currently has won six-straight contests after defeating Bethel (Kan.), 84-47, on Jan. 31 and Ottawa (Kan.), 57-55, on Feb. 2.
Joining the Top 25 this week is No. 22 Purdue Calumet (Ind.), No. 23 Grand View (Iowa) and No. 24 Siena Heights (Mich.). Grand View rejoins the poll after missing last week, while Purdue Calumet and Siena Heights are making its first appearance in the poll, dating back to 1999-2000.
Three teams fell out of the Top 25: Milligan (Tenn.) (No. 22), William Penn (Iowa) (No. 23) and Valley City State (N.D.) (No. 24).
Eleven of the 13 Division II women's basketball conferences/independents are represented throughout the Top 25, led by the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference with five teams. The Great Plains Athletic Conference follows with four teams.
The poll was voted upon by a panel of head coaches representing each of the conferences and Independents. The ninth regular-season poll will be announced on Feb. 12.
Notes: (All information as of the 1999 - 2000 season) Indiana Wesleyan has appeared at the top of the poll on 30 occasions, the most of any program, followed by Morningside (Iowa) with 19... There have been 14 different teams to garner the No. 1 ranking all-time ... Three schools have spent an entire season at No. 1: Morningside in 2008-09, College of the Ozarks (Mo.) in 2007-08 and Saint Francis (Ind.) in 1999-2000... In the last 13 years, six teams that have been rated No. 1 in the preseason have gone on to win the national championship with the last being Northwestern (Iowa), which has accomplished the feat the last two years... Morningside (112) and College of the Ozarks (105) are the only teams who have been ranked in the Top 25 for over 100 consecutive weeks... Sixteen teams have been ranked in the Top 25 all season.
