NAIA Division II Women’s Basketball Coaches’ Top 25 – No. 9
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - For the sixth-straight week, Indiana Wesleyan claims the top spot in the 2012-13 NAIA Division II Women's Basketball Coaches' Top 25 Poll, the national office announced on Tuesday. The Wildcats received six-of-12 first-place votes and 304 points to edge College of the Ozarks (Mo.) by one point for the No. 1 ranking.
On Feb. 27, the NAIA is providing a free live selection show with graphics to reveal the 32-team bracket for the 22nd Annual State Farm-NAIA Division II Women's Basketball National Championship. The women's bracket will be announced at 7 p.m. CST.
Indiana Wesleyan started last week by extending its winning streak to six-games after defeating then-No. 3 Saint Francis (Ind.), 59-57, on Feb. 6. The Wildcats winning streak came to an end three days later with a 50-48 loss to No. 13 Bethel (Ind.).
Holding at No. 2 is College of the Ozarks, who received three-of-12 first-place votes and tallied 303 points. Collecting the last three first-places votes and notching 287 points is No. 3 Eastern Oregon. The Mountaineers clinched the Cascade Collegiate Conference regular season title with a 60-50 win over then-No. 16 College of Idaho on Feb. 8.
Moving up two positions, from No. 6 to No. 4, is Morningside (Iowa) with 282 points. The Mustangs defeated No. 9 Briar Cliff (Iowa), 85-73, on Feb. 9 in its only game of the week. Rounding out the top five is No. 5 Saint Francis with 276 points. The Cougars lost to No. 1 Indiana Wesleyan, 59-57, but bounced back to defeat Grace (Ind.), 64-56, on Feb. 9.
Making the biggest jump in the poll this week is Roosevelt (Ill.), Mayville State (N.D.) and Siena Heights (Mich.) as each team improved three spots in the rankings. Roosevelt, who jumped from No. 14 to No. 11, went 1-1 last week. The Lakers started the week by falling to NAIA Division I Robert Morris (Ill.), 86-69, on Feb. 6 and bounced back on Feb. 9 in an 84-53 victory against Calumet St. Joseph's (Ind.).
Mayville State went from No. 18 to No. 15 after defeating Dakota State (S.D.), 77-43, on Feb. 6 in its only game of the week. The Comets are currently on a four-game winning streak. Jumping from No. 24 to No. 21 is Siena Heights. The Saints were victorious in both their games last week as they won 59-35 over Lourdes (Ohio) on Feb. 6 and finished the week with a 66-64 victory over Madonna (Mich.) on Feb. 9.
Joining the Top 25 this week is No. 25 Friends (Kan.). The Falcons have won 12-straight contests. Friends defeated McPherson (Kan.), 72-50, on Feb. 7 and followed with a 67-28 victory two days against Bethany (Kan.) The Falcons are currently tied for first in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference.
One team fell out of the Top 25: Tabor (Kan.) (No. 21).
Eleven of the 13 Division II women's basketball conferences/independents are represented throughout the Top 25, led by the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference with five teams. The Great Plains Athletic Conference follows with four teams.
The poll was voted upon by a panel of head coaches representing each of the conferences and Independents. The tenth regular-season poll will be announced on Feb. 19.
Notes: (All information as of the 1999 - 2000 season) Indiana Wesleyan has appeared at the top of the poll on 31 occasions, the most of any program, followed by Morningside (Iowa) with 19... There have been 14 different teams to garner the No. 1 ranking all-time ... Three schools have spent an entire season at No. 1: Morningside in 2008-09, College of the Ozarks (Mo.) in 2007-08 and Saint Francis (Ind.) in 1999-2000... In the last 13 years, six teams that have been rated No. 1 in the preseason have gone on to win the national championship with the last being Northwestern (Iowa), which has accomplished the feat the last two years... Morningside (113), College of the Ozarks (106) and Saint Xavier (Ill.) (100) are the only teams who have been ranked in the Top 25 for over 100 consecutive weeks... Sixteen teams have been ranked in the Top 25 all season.
