Sioux City, Iowa -Saint Xavier (Ill.) fell victim to an upset in conference tournament action, but quickly erased those memories in Wednesday's opening game of the State Farm-NAIA Division II Women's Basketball National Championship. The Cougars used a 16-5 run to end the first half and start the second half to pull away and pull away to a 70-49 victory over St. Thomas (Fla.) at the Tyson Events Center in Sioux City, Iowa.
St. Thomas was held to shooting 25.8 percent from the floor in the first half. The Bobcat's shooting improved in the second half but it was not enough for St. Thomas to claw back into the game. Berna Miranda led the Bobcats with 9 points.
Saint Xavier responded to a surprising loss to Indiana South Bend in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament by dominating St. Thomas. The Cougars scored 22 points off of St. Thomas turnovers. Saint Xavier shot 43.5 percent from the floor for the game. Suzie Broski was 12-of-20 from the floor for a game-high 24 points.
The Cougars have advanced to the second round where they will face the winner between Saint Francis (Ind.) and Reinhardt (Ga.) on Friday at Noon.
