PRIMM, Nev. - The No. 19 Viking's men's golf team trailed by one stroke going into today's final round at The Primm Battle hosted by Grand View (Iowa) in Primm, Nevada. GV battled through windy course conditions to score its lowest round of the tourney, and the lowest overall round of the day, to win the event by six strokes.
In a field that featured nine teams ranked in the top 25 in the NAIA, Grand View overtook eight higher ranked teams, including the #2, #4, #5, #7, #9, #11, #13 and #15 teams in the nation.
The Vikings finished with an overall two-day three-round team total of 848 (284-284-280). Mike Slavin led GV individually and finished in third place and earned All-Tournament honors with a three-round total of 209 (67-73-69). Matt Weeks and David Walter also placed in the top 20 with 15th and 20th place finishes, respectively.
Tyler Christians was 27th overall and Kyler Ludwig 31st.
"Wow, this is a great win for this team! They have been working hard and were very motivated after our two early season performances. It was truly a team effort with every player counting at least two out of the three rounds. All the guys stepped up and played well especially Mike Slavin who finished in third place. This will be the strongest field all year with the exception of the National Championship so to win this event was truly a great accomplishment for this team!" said head coach Chris Winkel.
Pending weather/course conditions, the Vikings will host their home meet next Monday and Tuesday, April 1-2, at a time and place to be determined. Visit the Viking athletic website for the most up-to-date information.
