SIOUX CITY, Iowa – Morningside's (Iowa) Monte Larsen, a graduate student from Neola, Iowa, won the men’s seeded 800-meters during Saturday’s action at the Kansas Relays track & field meet in Lawrence.
Larsen, this year’s NAIA 800-Meter National Champion during the indoor season, ran a time of 1:50.34 to top a field of eight runners at the Kansas Relays. Larsen finished just off his school record clocking of 1:50.28 he set in 2011 when he was the runner-up at the NAIA Outdoor Track & Field National Championships.
Jermaine Blake of Lincoln University was the runner-up with a time of 1:50.95. Kyle Hanson, a Kansas State University athlete who competed unattached, finished third with a tie of 1:51.01, followed by Paul Pape, University of Nebraska Kearney, fourth, 1:51.02; Michael Kinuthia, Neosho County Community College, fifth, 1:51.97; Brendan Soucie, University of Kansas, sixth, 1:52.03; Tyler Banks, Oral Roberts University, seventh, 1:56.89; and Andrew Langille, Monmouth University, eighth, 2:01.39.
Larsen was this week’s NAIA National Men’s Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week after he was named the MVP in the men’s collegiate division at last weekend’s Sioux City Relays, where he won the 800-meters, finished second in the 400-meter hurdles, and anchored the Mustangs to victories in the sprint medley, 1600-meter, and 3200-meter relays.
