2013 NAIA Menís Outdoor Track & Field Athlete of the Week - No. 7

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Austin Basterrechea of College of Idaho has been named NAIA National Men’s Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week and Clay Shepperson of Oklahoma Baptist has been tabbed as the NAIA National Men’s Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week, the national office announced Wednesday. Basterrechea and Shepperson were selected based on their performances from April 22 – 28.

Basterrechea, a junior from Gooding, Idaho, won the decathlon at the Cascade Collegiate Conference Championships on April 26. He won 7-of-10 events and set a school-record with a point total of 6,933, which is the second-best in the NAIA. In the decathlon events, Basterrechea set the school record in pole vault vaulting 4.40 meters (14-5 ¼).

Shepperson, a freshman from Elgin, Okla., anchored the three relays he participated in at the Drake (Iowa) Relays on April 27. He helped the Bison to a first place finish in the Sprint Medley Relay with a time of 3:22.44 and the 4x800 relay by clocking a time of 7:31.40. The 4x800 relay time was the fastest in the NAIA this season. Shepperson and the Bison competed in the 4x400 relay, which saw the team finish in a time of 3:11.03.
