NAIA West Summit creates energy around conference collaboration

August 29, 2013

MENLO PARK, Calif. — Forty one presidents, athletics directors and conference commissioners from the California Pacific Conference, Cascade Collegiate Conference, Frontier Conference and Golden State Athletic Conferences met Aug. 28 at the first NAIA West Summit.

Held on the campus of Menlo College, Atherton, Calif., the meeting gathered regional NAIA leaders to discuss NAIA membership, strengthening conferences and ways conferences in the western U.S. can work together.

Jim Carr, President and CEO, opened with a presentation on the current state of the NAIA. He partnered with Lori Thomas, Senior Vice President for Membership and Character Initiatives; and Lynn Meredith, Vice President for Marketing and Communications.

The summit agenda included Strengthening the NAIA West: Marketing, Membership & National Championships; Conference Collaboration: Working for Common Growth; and What Does Success Look Like? Creating the Unified Platform.

Open forum discussions focused on championship structure, western host sites, travel reimbursement, associate membership criteria, additional sports in the west and marketing.

“The summit was very well received by membership,” said Jim Carr. “Those in attendance suggested we should hold this annually in the West and take this format to all areas of the NAIA membership. It is something we're considering.”
