COLUMBIA, Mo. – The No. 3 Texas at Brownsville Ocelots women's volleyball team completed the sweep going 4-0 over the weekend at the Hampton Inn Classic finishing off Saturday with a win over No. 14 Park (Mo.) and another over the No. 2 Columbia (Mo.) Cougars in a rematch of the 2012 NAIA National Championship Tournament semifinal game. The Columbia game was also the NAIA Match of the Week.
"It was a really great weekend to see where we are at. We saw some good things but also saw a lot of things we need to do better. I was very happy with the way we played against a very good Park team." Coach Todd Lowery said. "I thought we played great in game one of the Columbia match but need to get better at maintaining our focus from start to finish."
From the get go against Columbia UTB was in sync on their way to a 3-0 (25-18, 25-21, 25-14) victory.
UTB managed a 6-0 run in the first set after the Cougars tied the score at 12 midway through the set. Columbia held n early advantage in game two and led 13-10. The Ocelots would answer with a 4-0 run and go on to take the last four points. In the third and final set UTB jumped out to an early 12-5 lead and didn't look back closing out the game and the match with seven straight points.
Against Park, All-Americans Vanja Joksic and Danica Markovic spearheaded the UTB attack. Joksic had nine kills and six blocks with Markovic adding eight kills and twenty digs.
Versus the No. 2 team in the country in Columbia, Markovic ended the game with eleven kills and two blocks with All-American Ana Guerra assisting with nine kills and four blocks. Defensively, libero Heather Meeuwsen ended the match with eleven digs.
Next up for the Ocelots is a September 6 date with No. 10 Embry-Riddle at 2:00 p.m. in Fort Worth, Texas.
