FORT WORTH – The No. 2 Texas at Brownsville Ocelots women's volleyball team put two more games on their six game winning streak beating the No. 10 Embry-Riddle (Fla.) Eagles 3-2 (7-25,25-22,16-25,25-23,7-15) in five sets and swept the Lewis & Clark Pioneers 3-0 ( 25-13, 25-15, 25-21) at the Wesleyan Hughes Classic.
"We played just okay against Embry-Riddle and went five games. We were able to play better against Lewis & Clark and had to do it with no rest." Coach Todd Lowery said.
The Embry-Riddle matchup was the NAIA game of the week and did not disappoint. After UTB took quick control of the first set it was up and down from then on until the final and deciding set. In the second set the Eagles took a quick 7-5 however, during the set after a UTB timeout, the Ocelots regained the lead at 22-19 lead. The Eagles finished on a 6-0 lead to take the second set 25-22.
In the third set, the Ocelots took the second set loss personal starting on an 8-0 run. The Eagles would make it close at 16-10 but UTB would take charge quick after that in route to a 25-16 win.
Embry-Riddle hoping to have a chance to tie up the match at two games a piece gave UTB everything they could muster to beat the Ocelots 25-23 and force a fifth set.
With their backs against the wall UTB responded the Eagles challenge early and often during the final frame. The Ocelots jumped to an early 7-1 and never looked back winning the fifth set 15-6 putting away the Eagles in what the NAIA deemed the best game in country over the weekend.
All-Americans Danica Markovic and Vanja Joksic each recorded a team-high 15 kills, with Markovic contributing eight digs and Joksic tallying five blocks. All-American Ana Guerra led all players with eight blocks (one solo). Heather Meeuwsen picked up a team-leading 16 digs and Xiao Yu "Jade" Guo totaled a team-best 42 assists.
In the second game of the doubleheader it took UTB only three games to beat Lewis & Clark which was something that coach Lowery liked seeing after the long match versus Embry-Riddle.
With no rest, UTB was in control over every set versus the Pioneers. Leading the way for the Ocelots was Markovic and Dokter with 12 and 10 kills respectively.
Meeuwsen and Guo had eight digs each with Guo adding 25 assists. The twin towers of Joksic and Guerra accounted for a total of 14 blocks.
UTB stays in Fort Worth on Saturday for matches versus Briar Cliff (Iowa) and Rocky Mountain (Montana).
