PRESCOTT, Ariz. — The Eagles of Concordia (Calif.) defeated the host Embry-Riddle (Ariz.) by a score of 2-1 on Sunday afternoon at ERAU Field in the Tourbeau's National Men's Soccer Game of the Week, presented by NSCAA and Admiral Soccer.
Both teams came out firing, as the visiting Eagles took 12 shots and put eight of them on goal. Embry-Riddle took more chances with the ball and put nine-of-15 shots on goal through the match. Freshman goalkeeper Jordan Brinkley made three saves and gave up one goal in the first half before being replaced at the half by junior Paul Elias. Elias saved five shots on goal in the second half to take the victory for the Eagles and notch his first career win at Concordia.
In a chippy defensive battle, Embry-Riddle struck first with a goal from Isaac Sanchez at the 27-minute mark. Sanchez put the shot past Brinkley unassisted.
The Eagles had an answer for Embry-Riddle a minute into the second half, as freshman Asher Axe found the back of the net for Concordia at the 46-minute mark to knot it up at 1-1 and score his first as an Eagle. It was Axe again with the go-ahead and the game-winner at the 75-minute mark. Axe recorded his first two career goals in the match, as well as his first game-winner.
Junior Mario Soto gave Axe an assist for one goal – the other was all Asher.
Concordia distributed 12 shots evenly with six per period, while Embry-Riddle had five in the first and 10 in the second period. Both teams took seven corner kicks. Embry-Riddle had two players receive yellow cards, and each team turned in solid performances at the keeper position. Concordia's keepers saved eight-of-nine to Embry-Riddle's six-of-eight, giving the Eagles their third win of the season and moving them to 3-3 on the year.
