KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Hastings (Neb.) earns its NAIA-leading third No. 1 ranking in the first NAIA Men's Soccer Modified Ratings Percentage Index (MRPI) of the 2013 season. The 7-0-0 Broncos, who have been ranked No. 1 in the two previous NAIA Men’s Soccer Coaches’ Top 25 polls, also become the first men’s soccer program to top the MRPI in different seasons.
Since 2010, six different teams have held the No. 1 position in a MRPI poll: Hastings (3), Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) (2), Rio Grande (Ohio) (2), former member Simon Fraser (B.C.) (2), Auburn Montgomery (Ala.) (1) and Mobile (Ala.) (1).
Judson (Ill.) of the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference is the highest mentioned team in the MRPI who was not ranked in the most recent coaches’ poll. The Eagles, who have not received votes in any coaches’ poll this season despite owning a 5-1-0 record, ranked No. 24 in the MRPI.
The MRPI consists of the team’s modified winning percentage, their opponents’ winning percentage and the cumulative ratings points from the NAIA Men’s Soccer Coaches’ Top 25 Poll. Each of the three values has a weighted percentage calculated in the MRPI. The MRPI modifies the value of home/away/neutral results and adds more value for games against opponents ranked in their respective national poll.
For a complete description of the MRPI formula, go to Appendix D in the Soccer Coaches’ Manual, or click here.
The MRPI—first adopted in 2010—will select the at-large qualifying teams and seed the 32-team national championship field. For a complete NAIA Men’s Soccer Modified Ratings Percentage Index calendar, click here. The next MRPI will be announced on Oct. 23.
