No. 19 Dordt Hits No. 5 Midland With First Loss

FREMONT, Neb. --The Dordt (Iowa) Defenders earned a critical early season Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) volleyball match over previously unbeaten Midland (Neb.) in Fremont, Neb., on Saturday afternoon. The win closed a week in which Dordt lost in five sets to Northwestern (Iowa) and lost Friday night to Nebraska Wesleyan. Dordt won the match in dominating fashion by a 3-1 count (25-14, 25-20, 20-25 and 25-21).

The Defenders pulled away from a 5-5 tie to lead 11-7 with Lindsey Floen knocking down three kills in a row to extend a one point lead to four. Dordt kept the momentum going and rolled up a 20-9 advantage as Celaine Haan served the Defenders to a six point run that included three errors by the Warriors. Dordt eventually got the win with back to back attack errors by Midland.

Dordt built a 9-4 lead in set two before the hosts mounted a comeback and led as late as 15-14. An Elizabeth Kiel tied it and Brooke Wolterstorff recorded back to back ace serves. After a sideout to cut the gap to one, the Defenders never allowed Midland to get closer than two and won 25-20.

Midland claimed the win in set three to fight off the sweep and never trailed in winning 25-20. Dordt got as close as 13-12 but couldn’t take the set. Dordt took control of the fourth set as Jocelyn Bousema served the Defenders to four straight points to turn a 7-7 tie to an 11-7 lead and the Defenders didn’t allow Midland to get closer than three before winning 25-21.

Dordt hit for a .343 kill efficiency and started the match with sets where they hit for a .417 and .480 kill efficiency respectively. Dordt got 14 kills from Brooke Wolterstorff and Lindsey Floen had 11 while committing just one error in 19 swings. Jenna Horstman added 10 kills and Meghan Krausman six. Kayla Gesink put up 36 assists and Kayla Broekhuis had 16 digs.

Mackenzie Scheef had 14 kills and Megan Farley lofted 38 assists.

Dordt is 12-4 overall and 4-2 in the league while Midland is 22-1 overall and 4-1 in league play. Dordt will host Mount Marty (S.D.) on Tuesday night in its next outing.
