WACO, TEXAS – Morningside (Iowa) wide receiver Kyle Schuck and Georgetown (Ky.) linebacker Brock Messina headline the 25-man 2013 American Football Coaches Association (AFCA)-NAIA All-America First Team, announced today by the AFCA. An additional 25 student-athletes were recognized on the second team, which was also selected by the AFCA-NAIA All-America Committee.
The AFCA has selected an All-America team since 1945 and currently selects teams in all five of its divisions. What makes these teams so special is that they are the only ones chosen exclusively by the men who know the players the best — the coaches themselves.
Schuck led the nation in receiving with 1,419 yards, averaging 109.2 yards per game. He also led the nation in receiving touchdowns with 21, accounting for nearly 10 points a game. Messina was second in the nation in sacks, with 15.5, and was fifth in the nation in tackles for loss per game (2.2). He recorded 75 total tackles and four forced fumbles on the season as well.
This past June, the NAIA Football Coaches Association and the National Administrative Council approved the addition of a NAIA-All-America Second Team to allow a greater number of deserving student-athletes to be recognized as All-Americans. This 25-man squad is selected in the same fashion and by the same committee as the First Team. The First Team is the same as what is published by the AFCA and on AFCA.org.
